The collection of books is the largest and oldest of its kind in Scandinavia. It comprises a total of around 280.000 volumes.

The oldest book dates from 1512.
|

·
|
The earliest surviving acquisitions arrived around 1754.
|
Online registration was begun in 1991.
|

In 1999 a complete retro conversion was initiated which was completed in 2003.
|

From October 2007 it has been possible to search and make requests online for the entire accession from 1754 up to the present.
This is also the case with all the materials, which were already registered online and which were incorporated into the collection on the amalgamation with the library of the library of the Danish National Gallery.

Acquisitions policy:
Within all of the relevant subject areas specialist literature is purchased in all the principal Western European languages, with the main emphasis on the Scandinavian languages, English, German, French and Italian.
Focus is primarily on such subjects as:
· The history of art and architecture
· Art theory, aesthetics and method
· Space, colour, perspective
· Technique, iconography, topography
· Schools of art, the history of collections and museums
· Art and society, also public art
